Venezuelan arepas go burgundy for La Vinotinto football team

Venezuela's national snack, the round corn-flour arepa, has been given a makeover to celebrate the national football team's remarkable success in this year's Copa America football tournament.

Nicknamed La Vinotinto (The Burgundy), and more recently La Remolacha Mecanica (The Clockwork Beetroot), the Venezuelan side have played consistently well in the tournament beating Ecuador 1-0, Chile 2-1, and drawing with Paraguay 3-3.

They now face Paraguay again in the semifinals in what is sure to be nailbiting, end-to-end game. Whatever the outcome, the team have played so well there are sure to be parties throughout Venezuela tonight.

In Merida, a city in Venezuela's Andean region, the owner of a small foodstall in the Periferico Market of Merida is selling burgundy-coloured arepas made with beetroot, served with fried eggs, avocado and cheese for 15 Bolivares ($4) a plate.
